The Precision of “Help Me Understand”

In any high-stakes interaction, the most dangerous assumption you can make is thinking you know what the other person is thinking.
Most people speak in generalities. They give you the "surface level" of their thoughts... statements like "It's too expensive," or "We aren't ready to move forward." If you respond to those surface statements with logic, you are shadowboxing. You are fighting an opponent that isn't actually there.
Unpacking the "Deep Structure"
To lead effectively, you must move past what people say and get to what they actually mean.
In communication strategy, we look for the data that has been deleted or generalized.
When someone gives you a vague objection, they aren't being difficult; they are simply providing an incomplete map.
Your job as a leader is to help them fill in the details. You don't do this by cross-examining them; you do it by inviting them to explain their internal logic.
The Strategy: Soft-Entry Precision
The goal is to lower defensive barriers while increasing data retrieval. You want to move from a state of "I need to be right" to a state of "I need to be certain."
In the Exactly What to Say framework, we use a specific phrase to bridge the gap between confusion and clarity.
The Magic Words: “Help me understand…”
When you use this preface, you are politely asking the other person to justify their position. It is almost impossible to be offended by this request.
Instead of defending your fee, say: "Help me understand what you’ve seen that makes you feel that is the case?"
Instead of pushing for a signature, say: "Help me understand what would need to happen for you to feel comfortable moving forward today?"
The Takeaway
Clarity is a shared resource. You cannot lead someone to a destination if you don't understand their starting point.
By using "Help me understand," you force the other person to move from an uneducated opinion to a specific fact.
Often, in the process of explaining it to you, they realize for themselves that their objection was based on a lack of information.
Fewer words. Better data. Stronger leadership.
